The first set of variables are the simulation and design parameters, as described by Table 2 in the text.

Following are the analytic approximations from Table 1, along with intermediary variables needed to compute them. For cases where these results are approximate (such as the FE estimator's variance) the variable has the prefix "app"; where these results are exact (such as the UW estimator's variance) the variable has the prefix "ana".

The next variables, with no prefixes, give the simulation-based bias, variance, and MSE estimates for each estimator, as well as the mean variance component estimated by FIRC (sigma_b_firc) and FIRC+ (sigma_b_given_eta_fircplus).

The next set of variables give the simulation-based MSE estimates of versions of each estimator where we have removed the 10%, 20%, or 30% least precise sites, in order to assess self-efficiency.

Finally, app_winner and sim_winner denote which estimator has the lowest MSE (according to the approximation or the simulation, respectively), and the various self_e variables indicate whether each estimator was self-efficient (i.e., its simulation-based RMSE was lower than that for the versions where the 10%, 20%, or 30% least precise sites were discarded).
